South Tyrol, 1915.
On the dawn of his eighteenth birthday, Matteo, a young man from a humble mountain community already ravaged by war, is called to enlist in the Austro-Hungarian army to defend the Monarchy against the invading Italian forces.
Scared and unwilling to fight against people he does not consider an enemy, Matteo with his best friend Geremia attempt to evade the draft by hiding in the wild Alpine forest that surrounds their home.
Croste di Polenta is a film about the innocence of youth being ripped away by the relentless tides of war and the mechanical onslaught of modernity that threatens to wipe out the traditions of an ancient world.
